We are currently seeking a Trainee Pig Stock Person to join a large pig breeding farm and work within a team of 6 people. This is a temporary on going position with the potential to be offered a permanent contract after 12 weeks. The working day will be 8 hours Monday to Friday each week and there will also be an additional requirement for weekend work which consists of alternate weekends working mornings only.
This position will ideally suit an individual with an interest in animal care who is looking for on going career development and willing to achieve industry accredited qualifications.
The role involves the care of pigs at various ages including feeding, cleaning out and handling and moving duties. Additional duties from an early stage require the trainee to use initiative and take responsibility on a rage of tasks which include:-
- Working as part of a team responsible for minor veterinary tasks such as vaccinations
- Check and recording of feed levels, water and environmental temperatures
- Observation of livestock to assist the other team members in achieving high standards of health and welfare of the animals
No previous experience of working with pigs is necessary, but a qualification in animal care would be seen as an advantage. Applicants will join the in house training scheme which includes a mixture of on the farm skills training and off-site classroom training. This training leads through level 1 to 3 certificates of competence accredited industry qualifications.
The level of pay is set at minimum wage for the first 3 months and is subject to increase following successful achievement of the qualifications.
Candidates must also have their own transport in order to reach the location of this remote site.
