Senior Design Engineer

I am currently recruiting for a fantastic opportunity to join an innovative, forward thinking business who are keen to recruit a technically sound Senior Design Engineer to join there business.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Perform Design, Research and Development activities to ensure completion of all projects on time, in full and to agreed budget.
  • Participate in regular design reviews to ensure all necessary remedial actions are taken to ensure OTIF delivery, allocated budget hours and quality levels are met.
  • Understand the quality, cost and delivery implications of different technical solutions and find the optimum solution for each situation.
  • Work closely with all internal customers to ensure they are aware of upcoming production requirements and plan the early release of designs if necessary to accommodate supply base limitations (especially material availability, long lead time and/or specialist processes, long lead time items, limited process capacity, etc)
  • Support the compilation of functional and technical specifications for products.
  • Lead designated design projects, ensuring compliance with the project plans and completion on time, in full and to agreed budget.
  • Understand the quality, cost and delivery implications of different technical solutions and find the optimum solution for each situation.
  • Maintain project files information, ensuring accuracy, completion and version control.
  • Regularly review project/design worksheets ("to do" sheets) and update information accordingly, keeping file copy current.
  • Ensure a current Bill of Material (BoM) is filed in relevant section of Project File at all times, communicating changes to the Operations Manager, Project Director and Purchasing/Production team as appropriate.
  • All new parts created are to be given an estimated cost to ensure the BoM reflects the best estimate current cost.
  • All new assemblies/sub-assemblies created are to be given an assembly "routing" in the current MRP system (Factory Master) with estimated hours for all activities associated with achieving the assembly/sub-assembly envisaged by the design.
  • Ensure products conform to appropriate technical standards & directives (e.g. CE) as well as Health & Safety legislation.
  • Prepare risk assessments, Technical Construction Files and Operation & Maintenance manuals where necessary.
  • As appropriate, lead engineering, technical and design review meetings with customers and suppliers.
  • Identify new technology suppliers for current and future products & projects and work with them to achieve common goals.
  • Attend daily project action reviews for all machines with the purpose of meeting the agreed overall activity plan.
  • Provide concept drawings/models for new, revised or special machines.
  • Provide estimates, cost breakdowns, suppliers quotations, etc in support of producing sales quotations for special machines
  • Where required, carry out training for others within the company to enable continued development and education.

People Management:

  • Ensure the wider business plan is communicated to your direct reports.
  • Ensure that they understand how, when and why they can contribute to the business plan through cascaded individual and team objectives.
  • Effectively manage, train and engage all direct reports with support from HR.
  • Conduct timely annual appraisal meetings for all direct reports.
  • Produce annual PDP's for all direct reports aligned to support the business plans.
  • Conduct regular review's of PDP's to ensure appropriate and effective progress is being made.
  • Work with HR to induct new starters into the business with the relevant training for the role.

Key Competencies/experience

  • Ability to work and contribute in a team environment. · Excellent communicator with strong written, verbal and visual communication style. · Self-motivated, self-starting and highly organized with the ability to work unsupervised. · Innovative, creative thinker with the ability to design bespoke turnkey and standard products. · Proven ability to deliver multiple designs all at different stages. · Ability to work on a variety of design projects of varying duration. · Adaptable to change, with a dynamic approach, think on feet and challenge the norm. · Experience of integrating quality into designs, ideally worked with ISO standards. · Commercially aware with ability to liaise with customers regarding requirements and project updates. · Proven track record of working under pressure to deliver quality work at pace. · Ideally experience of delegating and managing work of Junior Design Engineers. · Occasional travel UK/International.

Qualifications & Specific Technical Skills

  • Standalone Design Management experience working to a high level on multiple engineering designs. · Degree in Mechanical Engineering. · Engineering Design and analytical skills, e.g. DFMEA, calculations using engineering standards. · 3D modelling expertise, e.g.: SolidWorks. · Awareness of the selection of materials e.g.: composite, ferrous, non-ferrous, plastics etc and finishes. · Understanding of fundamental principles behind design decisions gained in industrial/automation environment in special purpose machinery, bespoke and turnkey engineering solutions, e.g.: DFM and DFA
