Transport Manager

Job Description

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Transport Manager for a provider of recycling solutions based in Nottingham.

The role will be responsible for productivity of the drivers, planning of the workload, management of the operations desk and ensuring that internal and external stakeholders' expectations are met and exceeded.

Key Responsibilities & Activities

  • Responsible for ensuring your own health and safety and that of others and promoting a positive health and safety culture within the workplace
  • Maintain positive relationships with both internal and external customers
  • Supports the optimisation of resources and reviews the operations to support improve profitability and customer service
  • Contributes to the development of the site as a whole by identifying and sharing best practice with peers
  • Monitors operational staff performance and suggests corrective action where appropriate
  • Will be required to conduct accident/incident investigations
  • Ensure compliance with transport and environmental legislation
  • Effective and detailed management of the P&L to enable production of accurate weekly forecasts
  • Detailed cost management
  • Assist in the production of annual budgets in accordance with corporate strategy
  • Prompt and effective resolution of account queries ensuring rectifications are put in place to prevent repeats
  • Managing route efficiency and utilising optimum disposal outlets where needed within the area to ensure effective use of vehicles and facilities
  • Manage driver availability and coverage in line with legislation and company procedures to ensure that there is suitable coverage at all times
  • Proactively manage absenteeism using the 'Bradford Factor' system in accordance with company policy

  • Ensure that any potential fails are advised to the business frequently through the day
  • Supervise vehicle availability on a daily basis ensuring that drivers have completed their checks in accordance with company policy
  • Contribute toward ongoing cost control, actively seeking to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs e.g. running and analysing cost centre reports
  • Ensure all administrative tasks associated with the Dispatch office are completed, including time sheets, tachograph records, payroll records, holiday rotas
  • Lead, motivate and develop direct reports, identifying training needs to maintain a flexible and multi-skilled workforce
  • Carry out annual appraisals
  • Carry out, out of hours observations

Person Specification


  • Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage
  • IOSH Managing Safely or similar qualification


  • Experience of managing in a labour intensive, multi-shift environment
  • Experience of a position of similar responsibility in Services or Logistics industry
  • Knowledge of existing and impending environmental and health and safety legislation environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of working within a time critical service
  • Champion of Health & Safety
  • IT literate (MS applications & CMMS)

Start time for this role is normally between 6am and 8am, you will work a 45 hour week (9 hours each day with an hour for lunch).
