Software Design Engineer

Job Description

Our client is an international leading manufacturer of special purpose engineering products.

Due to continued success they are now looking to recruit a permanent Software Design Engineer for their South Leicestershire site.

The Software Design Engineer role is primarily responsible for the design, development and control of software and / or embedded firmware used within their niche products. Remote/ onsite technical customer care support and the onsite commissioning of electronic systems are other activities required. Main responsibilities include: Develop and improve existing products / technology, Development of new products, Building and testing prototypes, Writing specifications and technical reports, Ensure safety regulations are met, Attending meetings with company's staff, suppliers, customers, Keeping up to date with technologies and regulations, Research for innovative technologies / solutions and develop the most effective way to implement those to existing or new products, Technical customer support, system diagnosis, fault finding and troubleshooting, Provide customer facing technical support to the customer service team, Liaising with customers and occasional overseas travel to advise, support and commission installations will also be part of the role. These tasks may involve prolonged heavy-duty activities such as, lifting heavy weights, work in confined spaces, work on mobile lifting platforms, etc.

The ideal Software Design Engineer candidate will have the following skills and experience: At least 3 years' experience in software architecture, website/webpage design, and embedded systems, Proven experience of embedded software / firmware development, Proven experience of webpage/website design, Understanding of Electronic Hardware, Ability to read electronic schematics, Experience of creating interactive webpages, Writing and editing content, Webpage design & layout, Understanding of web mark-up, including HTML5, Use of JSON, JavaScript and CCS / CCS3, Knowledge of different IP protocols & interfaces, Extensive experience in computer architecture and networking, Development of embedded software/firmware, Experience of practical hands-on development and troubleshooting of embedded systems, Embedded C/C++ (and/or other high-level languages), Knowledge of Unix/Linux environments and embedded Linux, Previous experience of software development on ARM CPU platforms or similar embedded SBC hardware advantageous, Experience presenting ideas to colleagues and members of the management team, Ability to schedule and coordinate work with tight deadlines, Pro-active attitude, can see and research for opportunities, Excellent customer facing skills, Ability to elaborate and deliver effective solutions autonomously and as a part of one or more teams, Ability to gather feedback from products through customers and installations and feed them back to the company to help assess the opportunity for a product improvement as well as the development of new products

Educational Qualifications:

Minimum academic level required: BS Degree or equivalent in Software Engineering / Computer Science or equivalent

Ideal academic level preferred: Relevant degree (Master's in Software Engineering / Computer Science or equivalent)

Portfolio of accomplished/successful works

Proven engineering knowledge

The following attributes would be desirable but not essential: Extensive knowledge of hardware interfaces, such as SPI, I2C, and UART (DMX, RS-485, CAN, NMEA 2000 etc), Experience with the use of oscilloscopes and other hardware debugging techniques, Design of IOT type products, Programming of Microchip PIC's using MPLAB, Basic mechanical knowledge, Basic optical knowledge, Experience of development of windows and or mobile applications using MS Visual Studio or similar

Benefits for the Software Design Engineer role include:

Salary is negotiable depending on experience but in the region of £40,000 - £45,000 per annum
