Interview tips
The hardest part of getting a job is likely to be the interview itself. It need not be a daunting experience - just think of it in terms of a two-way communication process - the company has to sell itself to you as much as you have to sell yourself to them. All interviews are different and there is no magic formula. However, the following tips may help you:
Before the interview
- Find out as much as you can about the company, its history, its structure, the type of work they undertake.
- Find out about the job - know what you have applied for!
- First impressions - yes, they do count. Ensure you arrive for an interview appropriately dressed - smart and professional will go a long way. Make sure that your hair is neat and tidy, shoes are clean and unscuffed and that aftershaves or perfumes are not overpowering.
- Get there on time - plan your route beforehand and make sure you allow enough time for traffic jams, etc.
During the interview
- Greet the interviewer with a firm handshake and make eye contact with a smile.
- Watch your body language - ensure that you look relaxed but professional.
- Answer the question that is being asked - don't go off at a tangent.
- Speak clearly and calmly.
- Don't interrupt the interviewer.
- Do sell yourself.
- If you don't understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat it.
- Don't be negative about previous employers - it is not professional.
- Be honest and courteous at all times.
- Finish the interview by thanking the interviewer for his or her time and shake his or her hand. Reiterate that you are very interested in the job on offer.
